Washington: After the US Supreme Court declared President Donald Trump's tariff policy unconstitutional, preparations have started to refund the fees collected in America. The US Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) has indicated that a new system is being prepared to return payments to importers. This decision is expected to provide relief to the businessmen of many countries of the world as well as India.

Why did the Supreme Court cancel the tariff?

Last month, the US Supreme Court had repealed many import duties imposed during the Trump administration, calling them unconstitutional. The court said that the process of implementing these tariffs was not in accordance with the Constitution. These tariffs were considered an important part of Trump's economic policy, through which additional taxes were imposed on goods coming from many countries.

What preparations is the customs agency making for refund?

US Customs and Border Protection agency official Brandon Lord told the court that a system would be put in place within 45 days to refund the tariff money. Under this process, limited information will be taken from importers so that the refund process can be made faster and simpler.

Preparation to return how much amount?

Government lawyers have met with a federal trade judge to negotiate a sweeping settlement to return some $166 billion to about 330,000 importers. The court has also directed the agency to initiate refund proceedings as soon as possible through its existing process.

How will importers get money?

According to officials, importers will have to file a declaration giving details of tariff payment. After this, upon confirmation, the payment will be returned to them along with interest. The special thing is that importers will not need to file a separate case for this. A lump sum payment will be made to them by the Finance Department.

How many importers had registered?

Officials also said that very few of the more than 3.3 lakh importers who paid illegal duty had registered for the electronic refund system. According to the data, only 21,423 importers had registered themselves in this system which came into effect from February 6.

Can India also got benefit?

Experts believe that this decision will impact international trade. Exporters from many countries including India may get relief, as many trade activities were affected by the duties imposed during the Trump administration.
